How we Roll

The WCCC is born

Like all great ventures, the WCCC idea was born in a pub. A number of cyclists who repeatedly met each other on the West Cork roads decided to form a club, with a view to becoming fitter, attracting new members, and, most importantly, wearing cool kit. Several of the riders had trained together for a gruelling 4 day 660 km Mizen-Malin trek in 2011 in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation (read all about it here). One of the participants, John O'Mahony, passed away in 2012. Before he died, John expressed a wish that his fellow cyclists would form a cycling club which would introduce a new generation of cyclists to the beauty of West Cork. In a Dunmanway pub in late 2012, the club was formed. John's memory is kept alive through the WCCC annual John O'Mahony memorial cycle.

In a few years, the WCCC has grown to 60 members, ranging from leisure cyclists to sportive riders to racers. Our members come from all around West Cork, from Enniskeane to Baltimore, from Clonakity to Bantry. The club probably serves a larger catchment than any other in the country. New members are always welcome (see here). We meet every Sunday morning throughout the year (therefore you'll have to get the mass the night before). We also run midweek spins.

Here's a photo showing some of the original WCCC crew receiving their new kit from our main sponsor - Centra Drimoleague. A proud day!
